WoW Forever race guide: choose your people, faction and class

Your race determines more than your appearance: it shapes your faction, available classes, starting story and racial toolkit. Here is how to make the choice without getting trapped by an old Classic tier list.

Start with the people you want to play with

Before comparing racials, ask your friends which region, ruleset and faction they are using. Forever uses rulesets instead of traditional realm selection; faction and ruleset still matter when coordinating group play. A choice that lets you adventure with your friends is usually more useful than a theoretical advantage on a chart.

Next, choose the class fantasy you want to play most often. A race cannot select every class, and Forever adds combinations that were unavailable in original WoW. The lists below follow Blizzard’s official Forever matrix, not Classic Era’s.

Not sure which role sounds fun? Read our complete class selection guide first, then return to the appropriate faction list.

Alliance: every race and available class

Human

Classes: Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior.

A versatile choice if you want a traditional Alliance journey, with seven class options. Human Hunter is new to Forever.

Dwarf

Classes: Hunter, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warrior.

A strong fit for a mountain-dwelling explorer or a character who favors dwarven history. Dwarf Shaman opens an elemental path on the Alliance.

Gnome

Classes: Mage, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior.

Choose Gnome for a small-statured character with a technical and arcane identity. Gnome Priest is a new combination.

Night Elf

Classes: Druid, Hunter, Priest, Rogue, Warrior.

A natural choice for players drawn to forests, nature magic and a Night Elf starting story. Night Elf is one of the Alliance options for Druid.

Skyborne — High Order

Classes: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Warrior.

The Alliance Skyborne path begins on Zephras Isle and can choose Mage. Skyborne access requires the Heroic Pack or higher.

Horde: every race and available class

Orc

Classes: Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior.

Pick Orc for a Horde character with a history rooted in Draenor and a wide selection of martial and magical classes. Orc Mage is new.

Tauren

Classes: Druid, Hunter, Shaman, Warrior.

Choose Tauren for a connection to the land and the Horde’s original Druid option. Its four classes cover a range of group roles.

Troll

Classes: Hunter, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior.

Troll offers seven class options and a distinct Darkspear identity. Troll Warlock is new to Forever.

Undead / Forsaken

Classes: Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior.

The Forsaken offer an unmistakably darker starting story. Undead Paladin is a new way to experience the Light on the Horde.

Skyborne — Windshaper

Classes: Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warrior.

The Horde Skyborne path begins on Zephras Isle and can choose Shaman. Skyborne access requires the Heroic Pack or higher.

How Skyborne works

Skyborne are Forever’s new playable people. Both paths begin on Zephras Isle, an experience Blizzard describes as levels 1–12. The Alliance High Order can become a Mage; the Horde Windshapers can become a Shaman. Both can choose Druid, Hunter, Rogue or Warrior.

Access matters: an active WoW subscription or game time provides access to Forever, but Blizzard says Skyborne and its starting experience require the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher. Check the current shop offer and your account entitlement before buying; you do not need that upgrade to play the other races.

Choose the path based on the faction you actually intend to join. The shared race name does not make the two faction choices interchangeable for playing with friends.

How much should racial abilities matter?

Racial abilities add utility and flavor, and Blizzard says Forever revised them. Their value depends on your class, enemy, activity and the live version of an ability. An effect that helps escape a dangerous situation, find resources or deal with a particular enemy may matter to you more than a small theoretical damage difference.

For a concrete example, Blizzard’s Forever deep dive describes Dwarf Stoneform as a tool against bleeds, poisons and diseases with physical-damage protection. Exact behavior and tuning can change, so read the current character-creation and in-game tooltips before treating any racial as a reason to commit.

Racial tools to compare

The following are examples reported by community references for Forever’s launch-era client. They are a starting point for comparison, not a complete tooltip list or an independent live-client test. Effects, cooldowns and tuning can change.

  • Human: Will to Survive removes stuns; Perception helps detect stealthed enemies.
  • Dwarf: Stoneform answers several physical status effects, while Find Treasure assists with locating chests.
  • Night Elf: Shadowmeld provides a concealment option; Elune’s Light offers a temporary critical-strike boost.
  • Gnome: Escape Artist helps against movement-impairing effects, while Eureka! provides a short offensive or healing boost.
  • Orc: Blood Fury provides an offensive cooldown; Shatter Curse addresses curses and banes.
  • Undead: Will of the Forsaken removes certain control effects, while Cannibalize can restore resources from suitable corpses.
  • Tauren: War Stomp controls nearby enemies, and Plainsrunning rewards sustained movement.
  • Troll: Berserking boosts attack and casting speed; Rapid Regeneration provides a channelled recovery option.
  • Skyborne: Walk on Air is a controlled glide. The two faction paths also have distinct utility, but references disagree on the exact faction assignment and haste values; verify those tooltips in character creation before choosing on that basis.

For a deeper comparison, see Method’s launch racial overview and Retreating Reality’s build 70790 client-string reference. Their Skyborne descriptions conflict, and client strings may not reflect server hotfixes.

Priests deserve an extra check: Blizzard’s class preview says Fear Ward and Devouring Plague became available to all Priests, while race-specific Priest spells still exist. Do not assume an old Classic recommendation for those spells applies unchanged.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Coordinate: confirm region, ruleset and faction with your group.
  2. Pick a class: decide whether you want to tank, heal, deal damage or keep multiple options open.
  3. Check the matrix: narrow the faction list to races that can actually play that class.
  4. Compare the journey: look at the character, animations, starting story and racial tools you will enjoy seeing for many hours.
  5. Confirm access: Skyborne has a separate upgrade requirement; other listed races are available through normal Forever access.
  6. Try the early levels: if the character does not feel right, experiment before investing heavily. There is no need to pick a race from an untested launch-day ranking.
